Kit McConnell leaves IOC to lead Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games

After 11 years of service with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Kit McConnell, Director of Sport, has announced his departure to take on a new professional challenge. McConnell has been appointed Chief Sport Officer of the Organizing Committee for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a role that marks the beginning of a new phase in his career. In a letter to international sporting federations, he expressed his excitement at joining the Brisbane 2032 team, led by Andrew Liveris and Cindy Hook, and his commitment to delivering an unforgettable Games.

Despite his excitement for this new chapter, McConnell also shared his sadness at leaving the IOC, where he has played a key role since 2014. During his time as Director of Sport, he led projects and collaborations that have left a significant mark on the Olympic Games and the international sports movement.

A LEGACY OF SUCCESS AT THE IOC

In his letter, McConnell highlighted the importance of the partnerships built with international sports federations, stressing that the achievements made during his tenure would not have been possible without these collaborations. From Olympic Games planning to joint projects, your leadership has been instrumental in ensuring the success of events such as the Olympic Winter Games and the Youth Olympic Games.

McConnell also assured that his departure will not affect the planning of upcoming Olympic events, such as the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The IOC has already begun the search for his replacement to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

THE BRISBANE 2032 OLYMPICS

McConnell’s appointment as Brisbane 2032 Chief Sport Officer reinforces Australia’s commitment to excellence in the organization of the Olympic Games. His IOC experience will be key to ensuring the Brisbane Games are a memorable event for both athletes and spectators around the world.

McConnell will move to Australia with his family on June 27, when his time at the IOC will officially come to an end. Until then, he will continue to work 100 percent on his current responsibilities, ensuring that ongoing projects continue to move forward as planned.
