Public voting concluded last Sunday for the Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards, an annual event that recognizes Hong Kong’s most outstanding athletes and teams. This year, more than 100 athletes and teams were nominated, cementing the importance of these awards in the local sporting arena.

Organized by the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC), the awards highlight the previous year’s sporting achievements. According to SF&OC president Timothy Fok, 2024 was a landmark year for Hong Kong athletes, who won two gold and two bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, marking a milestone in the city’s sporting history.

HONG KONG ATHLETES’ ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2024

In addition to the successes at the Olympic Games, Hong Kong athletes made significant breakthroughs in various international competitions. According to Fok, these achievements have elevated Hong Kong’s reputation on the world sporting stage. The Cathay 2024 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards not only celebrate these successes, but also allow the public to learn more about the athletes and support them through their vote.

The SF&OC chairman also highlighted upcoming major sporting events in 2025, such as the World Games, the National Games jointly organized by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, and the Asian Youth Games. At the recent Asian Winter Games in Harbin, the Hong Kong team achieved its best results to date, reinforcing SF&OC’s commitment to continue supporting local athletes.

SUPPORT FROM CATHAY AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS

A promotional event to encourage public voting, held at the New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, was attended by a number of prominent personalities. Among the guests were Vivian Chan, Cathay’s director of Marketing and Communications; Edgar Yang, honorary secretary general of SF&OC; Karl Kwok, vice president of SF&OC and chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee; and Camay Lee, assistant director of the Cultural and Leisure Services Department.

Vivian Chan underscored the commitment of Cathay, which is the Awards’ title sponsor for the sixth consecutive year. The airline, with nearly eight decades of history in Hong Kong, seeks to promote the development of sports, youth, arts and culture in the local community. Chan said Cathay will continue to support local athletes to shine on the world stage and to attract world-class sporting and cultural events to Hong Kong.
