For the first time in history, Africa will host the Mountain Running and Trail World Championship, an event that will take place in the South African city of Cape Town from October 6 to 10, 2027. The iconic Table Mountain will be the epicenter of the competition, offering a unique setting that combines natural beauty with a world-class sporting challenge.
The bid was jointly presented by Golazo South Africa, Athletics South Africa, and Western Province Athletics, successfully convincing the international organization thanks to the city’s experience in hosting major events such as the Cape Town Marathon and the Two Oceans ultramarathon. According to Sebastian Coe, president of World Athletics, “it is always exciting when a major athletics event is held for the first time on a new continent, and this is no exception.”
A unique setting for a global challenge
The runners participating in the championship will face technical and demanding terrain, with steep ascents and descents in iconic locations such as Table Mountain and Lion’s Head. Beyond the toughness of the course, one of the rewards will be the panoramic views of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding mountains. As highlighted by Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, “there is no better setting for this prestigious event than our Natural Wonder of the World, the iconic Table Mountain.”
Around 1,200 elite runners from over 80 countries are expected to participate, along with 2,000 participants in open public events, making the championship a true global celebration of trail running. For the organizers, this event will not only showcase Africa’s sporting potential but also boost the local economy and establish Cape Town as an international benchmark in hosting major sporting events.
