IOC-recognized status, Pan Am success, and global leadership highlight Canada’s growing influence in Muaythai.

Muaythai Canada has strengthened its position on the world stage as the country’s official governing body of the sport, recognized by the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, the only Muaythai federation acknowledged by the International Olympic Committee.

The federation also holds a unique position under the honorary presidency of His Excellency Kallayana Vipattipumiprates, Ambassador of Thailand to Canada, a symbolic link to the cultural heritage of Muaythai. Under the leadership of President Alin Halmăgean, the sport has made significant progress, both in building recognition across the country and in elevating Canada’s role internationally.

In 2024, Canada hosted the Pan American Championships, a landmark event that brought athletes from across the continent. Building on that success, a strong Canadian youth team is preparing for the Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi and the next Pan American Championships in Mexico City. “Our athletes are proving that Canada is not just developing the sport domestically but competing as part of the global Muaythai community,” said President Halmăgean.

Canada’s influence within IFMA extends beyond the ring. The country is home to Laura Vuculescu, one of IFMA’s International Technical Officials, and to Janice Lyn, who serves as IFMA’s Sports Director. Their roles reflect Canada’s contribution to the governance and global growth of the sport.

Muaythai Canada has been a member of IFMA since 1993, ensuring athletes, coaches and officials work under internationally recognized standards. Through its alignment with the World Muaythai Council, the federation also safeguards the traditions of Muaythai, connecting the sport in Canada to its origins in Thailand.

Since receiving full IOC recognition in 2016, Muaythai has gained momentum in international multi-sport events such as the World Games and European Games. With its official status confirmed, Canada is firmly part of this global movement, preparing athletes to compete at the highest level while preserving the cultural roots of the sport.

From hosting major continental championships to producing leaders within IFMA, Muaythai Canada has positioned itself not only as a federation developing athletes, but also as a country shaping the future of the sport worldwide.
