The stage is set in Sofia where the OTP Group 2025 Cadet World Judo Championships officially opened on Wednesday at the Asics Arena. Over the next five days the Bulgarian capital will serve as the world stage for 551 young judoka from 71 nations, each chasing a place on the podium and a chance to write their names into the sport’s history.
For these cadets aged between 14 and 17 the championships are more than a contest. They represent the culmination of years of dedication, sacrifice and ambition. Success in Sofia can be a springboard toward senior world titles and eventually Olympic glory.
The official draw held earlier in the city marked the formal beginning of the event. The International Judo Federation delegation included Dr Lisa Allan, Secretary General, Mr Kosei Inoue, Sport Director, and Mr Armen Bagdasarov, Head Referee Director. They were joined by the Bulgarian Judo Federation leadership with President Prof Roumen Stoilov, Executive Committee member Mr Georgi Georgiev and International Relations Director Ms Diana Maximova.

2025 Cadet World Judo Championships
In her opening speech Dr Allan underlined the broader importance of the competition. “This prestigious event unites the global judo family, bringing together athletes, coaches, officials and supporters in the true spirit of our sport. Over the next five days here in the Sofia Asics Arena we will witness the determination, passion and skill of the world’s finest cadets. Whether you are here in the arena or watching online, these championships promise to inspire. They will ignite the dreams of future champions and remind us of the timeless values that guide our sport respect, excellence and friendship.”
For host nation Bulgaria the occasion is a proud one. President Stoilov welcomed the international community and expressed confidence that Sofia would deliver an event of the highest standard.
The tournament will feature five days of competition including individual contests across all weight categories and the mixed team event on the final day. For the athletes every throw, hold-down and victory celebration carries weight not only in the pursuit of medals but also as a test of their readiness to compete on the world stage.
In the coming days, the Asics Arena will highlight much more than victories and defeats. It will reveal the resilience, ambition and skill of young judokas who may one day stand on the world and Olympic podiums.
