The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has formally approved its intention to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games during a meeting held in New Delhi. The cities of Ahmedabad and Bhubaneswar have emerged as the frontrunners to host the event, which would hold special significance as it coincides with the 20th anniversary of the New Delhi 2010 edition, the only time the country has hosted this multi-sport event. India now seeks to move past the scandals of corruption that marred that occasion and showcase its progress on the international stage.
The bid, backed by strong governmental will, has Ahmedabad as its main focus. Delegations from Commonwealth Sport, led by senior officials such as Darren Hall, Chris Jenkins, and Katie Sadlier, have already visited the city and other potential venues to assess infrastructure and meet with authorities. The project focuses on a sustainable approach, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN), and on creating a legacy that will inspire the youth of the Commonwealth.
A bet with its sights set on 2036
Beyond 2030, the Indian initiative is closely linked to its goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games, also with Ahmedabad as the main candidate. Sports leaders such as Harpal Singh have stressed that hosting an event of the magnitude of the Commonwealth Games would be a strategic step toward achieving that goal. The plan includes making use of existing facilities, prioritizing athlete comfort and performance, and boosting community engagement.
The Minister of Sports of Gujarat, Harsh Sanghavi, and the president of the Commonwealth Games Association of India, PT Usha, have agreed that the 2030 edition should go beyond sports spectacle and focus on a lasting impact. In addition to the Commonwealth Games, Gujarat is pursuing an ambitious calendar of international events, including competitions in volleyball, swimming, athletics, weightlifting, and beach sports, thereby strengthening India’s organizational experience and positioning as a host for major global sporting events.
