The Qatar Olympic Committee – QOC – has confirmed its involvement in discussions with the International Olympic Committee – IOC – as part of the new host city selection process for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036. The move reaffirms the country’s commitment to the development of global sport and its active role in promoting Olympic values.
The QOC highlights sport as a strategic pillar for Qatar. Its president, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, has noted that the country already has 95% of the necessary infrastructure to host the Games and that a national plan is in place to reach 100% readiness, with the aim of leaving a long-term social, economic, and environmental legacy.
A vision aligned with modern Olympism
The bid is fully aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy, both of which underscore sport and culture as key elements in building cohesive communities and fostering sustainable well-being. The Qatari approach is rooted in inclusion, sustainability, and international cooperation.
The QOC believes that hosting the Games must go beyond operational success. Its proposal views sport as a platform for youth empowerment, knowledge exchange, innovation, and addressing social and environmental priorities, in line with the values of the Olympic Movement.
A proven track record as a host nation
Qatar has hosted 18 world championships over the past two decades, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2019 World Athletics Championships, and the 2015 Handball World Championship. In the coming years, it will host, among other events, the 2024 World Aquatics Championships, the 2025 World Table Tennis Championships, the 2026 ISSF World Shooting Championship, the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, and the 2030 Asian Games.
As part of its preparation, the QOC has engaged in consultations with national and regional partners, and affirms there is strong alignment between technical groundwork and its strategic vision. The bidding process will move forward according to the highest standards and in close coordination with the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee.
If selected, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The project aims to present a distinct Arab model based on diversity, openness, and sustainable legacy, with the power to inspire future generations.
