The International Paralympic Committee –IPC– has announced the launch of a grant program aimed at funding multidisciplinary research projects on classification in Paralympic sport. This initiative, part of the Sport for Mobility program, seeks to strengthen integrity, credibility, and fairness in Para sport competitions.
The grants will be available over the next four years to International Federations –IFs-, International Organizations of Sport for the Disabled –IOSDs-, and Recognized International Federations –RIFs-, in collaboration with the scientific community. The goal is to support the development and improvement of evidence-based and best practice classification systems.
Opportunities for research
Classification is a fundamental pillar of Para sport, as it sets eligibility criteria and provides a framework that allows for fair and meaningful competitions by minimizing the impact of impairments on results. Classification systems are essential for the IPC to lead the Paralympic Movement, organize the Paralympic Games, and help its members enable athletes to achieve sporting excellence.
IPC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mike Peters PLY has emphasized that “the organization is committed to advancing classification systems and processes across the Paralympic Movement.” Following the publication of the new Classification Code in 2024, the IPC considers the launch of this grant program a significant step forward.
Details of the grant program and application deadlines
IPC Classification Director Tea Cisic has highlighted that “this program represents an important step in improving the scientific foundation of classification systems in Para sport. The results of the projects will benefit all IPC members and athletes, helping to strengthen the integrity and fairness of competitions.”
The first call for applications will remain open until the end of September, with four levels of funding available: up to 65,000 euros, up to 90,000 euros, up to 125,000 euros, and up to 250,000 euros. Projects must last between 12 and 36 months and be completed before October 2028.
The IPC has confirmed that there will be a second call for applications in the second half of 2026, further expanding opportunities for new organizations to access funding and develop innovative projects in this field.
