The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has taken an important step toward sustainability by officially signing the Sports for Nature Framework. This initiative, which brings together sports organizations from around the world, seeks to protect and restore biodiversity through sport, aligning with the FIVB’s strategic vision for 2032.

The signing took place in Palau, a country internationally recognized for its pioneering leadership in marine and environmental conservation and where the 2025 Mini Pacific Games are being held. The event was attended by Baklai Temengil, president of the National Olympic Committees of Oceania (ONOC) and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), whose involvement in the defense of sport and nature gave the event special significance.

Palau, a global example of marine conservation

Palau is home to one of the largest marine sanctuaries on the planet, covering 80% of its exclusive economic zone. This small island state has been a benchmark in sustainability, both for its climate diplomacy at the United Nations and for its educational initiatives at the local level. The choice of Palau as the setting for the signing underscores the importance that the FIVB attaches to nature as a common heritage and shared responsibility.

During the ceremony, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo highlighted the symbolism of signing the agreement in a country that represents “harmonious coexistence with the natural environment. This step reaffirms the federation’s responsibility to lead with purpose, not only for volleyball, but also for the planet and future generations.”

The FIVB’s commitment is part of a global trend in which sport is becoming an active agent of social and environmental transformation.
