Tiger Woods has had a busy week, traveling around the country and participating in high-profile events. On Sunday he was commentating the Genesis Invitational in California, while on Tuesday he played in his TGL golf league in Florida, where he made a funny mistake that went viral. However, his schedule didn’t end there. On Thursday, Woods traveled to Washington to participate in a meeting called by Donald Trump at the White House that is supposed to be key on the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, an issue that has generated great controversy in the sport.

The meeting, held at the White House, was attended by leading figures such as PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV Golf. Also in attendance was Adam Scott, a member of the PGA Tour’s Policy Board, and the meeting was prompted by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has a close relationship with Woods.

THE CONTROVERSY BETWEEN THE PGA TOUR AND LIV GOLF

Since its creation in 2021, LIV Golf has generated controversy by attracting big PGA Tour stars with million-dollar offers. Players such as Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau left the PGA Tour to join the Saudi-backed league. However, Tiger Woods turned down a multimillion-dollar offer to join LIV Golf, staying loyal to the PGA Tour.

The PGA Tour has sharply criticized LIV Golf, accusing the Saudi Public Investment Fund of “sportswashing,” i.e., using sport to enhance its international image and divert attention from human rights violations, such as the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. In addition, LIV Golf players have faced restrictions, such as disqualification from participating in most PGA Tour tournaments and difficulties in climbing the world rankings.

TIGER WOODS AND HIS ROLE IN THE NEGOTIATIONS

Tiger Woods, one of the most influential figures in golf, has been an advocate for unity in the sport. During the Genesis Invitational, he expressed optimism about the possible merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. “I think things are going to work out quickly,” Woods commented. “Fans want to see the best players competing together, and we’re going to get it done. It could happen this year or very soon.”

The meeting at the White House also coincided with a Black History Month event, in which Woods participated as a special guest. His presence at both events underscores his commitment not only to golf, but also to social and cultural issues.

WHAT DOES THIS MERGER MEAN FOR GOLF?

The possible merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf could change the landscape of professional golf. While negotiations have stalled since 2023, Thursday’s Donald Trump-driven meeting could be an important step towards a deal. Unification of the two entities would allow players to compete together again, something fans have been waiting for.

However, tensions between the two sides, especially over allegations against the Saudi Public Investment Fund, remain a stumbling block. Woods, with his influence and experience, could play a crucial role in reconciling these differences and building a more unified future for golf.
