On November 10, 2024, the pools of the Montauban Interclub Championship witnessed a very special day for French swimming. Amidst a festive atmosphere and with the presence of numerous fans, Léon Marchand, a four-time Olympic champion, returned to compete in the regional tournament where he first made a splash as a young swimmer. Despite his international achievements and having an important international competition in December, Léon chose to represent his original club, Dauphins Toulouse, at the Occitania Interclubs.

Marchand’s presence drew a crowd of fans, not just because of his renown, but also due to the affection the community has for him. Far from the spotlight of the world’s grand stages, this event turned into an intimate celebration, a reunion with his roots, giving fans—ranging from the youngest enthusiasts to seasoned supporters—a chance to come in droves to witness the champion’s performance. Everyone was eager to share a moment with him, hoping for an autograph or even just a simple smile.

A DOWN-TO-EARTH CHAMPION

Léon Marchand proved that despite his status as a global star, he remains the same young man who began swimming in these local tournaments. During the competition, he not only focused on his own races but also took the time to interact with younger swimmers and his former coaches, who couldn’t hide their pride in seeing him succeed on the world stage.

He competed in traditional events such as the 200-meter breaststroke, where he posted an impressive time of 2:06.12, even surpassing some of his recent marks. However, beyond the results, what truly stood out was his attitude. The champion was approachable, posing for photos, signing autographs, and chatting with attendees, reminiscing about his own beginnings in the world of swimming.

A REUNION WITH HIS ORIGINS

The Montauban event was not just another competition on Marchand’s calendar but a true homecoming. He also participated in various relays, such as the 4×200 freestyle and the 4×100 medley, swimming alongside his teammates from Dauphins Toulouse. It was a day that brought back memories for many of his early years as a swimmer, before he became a world-class figure.

Léon’s presence not only elevated the level of competition at the tournament but also fostered an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy. It was a reminder that, although he has reached the pinnacle of the sport, he has not forgotten where he came from or those who supported him along the way. This return to his roots was a testament to his humility, a virtue that makes him beloved both in and out of the pool.
