American John Slusher, known for his distinguished career at Nike, was appointed a few days ago as CEO of US Olympic and Paralympic Properties (USOPP). This body manages the commercial partnership between the Los Angeles 2028 Organizing Committee and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and Slusher will be responsible for coordinating LA28‘s commercial strategy, leveraging partnership and licensing rights for the Games and for the U.S. team.
During 26 years at Nike, Slusher was instrumental in building sports marketing partnerships, managing relationships with major sports figures. Prior to his time at Nike, he began his career as an attorney at O’Melveny and Myers, after earning his J.D. from the University of Southern California. His experience with the world’s most influential sports brand brings valuable strategic perspective to this new phase of his career.
FROM SUCCESS WITH NIKE TO HIS ROLE AT USOPP
Under the direction of LA28 President Casey Wasserman and CEO Reynold Hoover, Slusher will oversee USOPP’s revenue generation, including national sponsorships, consumer products, hospitality and ticket sales. His leadership will be key to maintaining the profitability of the project and ensuring a memorable experience for athletes and fans, as well as a lasting legacy for the Olympic and Paralympic movement in the United States.
Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the USOPC, highlighted the importance of having Slusher on board for this critical stage, stating that his marketing expertise and passion for Olympic sport will drive new opportunities for sponsors and provide ongoing support for Team USA athletes. Slusher’s mission will be not only to enhance the Olympic brand in the U.S., but also to foster a stronger relationship with future generations.
THE LOS ANGELES GAMES: A NEW VISION
Slusher’s commitment to the LA28 team is focused on developing a unique Olympic experience that reflects both the competitive spirit and the inclusive and diverse character of host city Los Angeles. With the endorsement of two previous editions of the Games in 1932 and 1984, LA28 seeks to stand out for its innovation, sustainability and the positive impact it will leave on the community.
“I’m excited to return to this exceptional city to work with a high-quality team to create something that will make history. I have spent my career supporting the world’s best athletes and I am honored to be part of the team that will welcome them to Los Angeles in 2028,” Slusher said upon taking office. His arrival represents a crucial step in the build-up to the Games, ensuring that the LA28 vision not only resonates with Americans, but also projects a message of unity and sporting excellence globally.
FUNDING AND COLLABORATION
The 2028 Los Angeles Organizing Committee is a not-for-profit organization funded by sponsorship agreements, licensing and hospitality programs, in addition to a contribution from the International Olympic Committee. The planned budget for the Games is $6.884 billion (€6.351 billion) and with the addition of Slusher, LA28 aims to strengthen its commercial partnerships and sustainable management model, reaffirming the commitment to leave a positive impact on society.
